April’s Topic: Air Quality Awareness
The theme this week is an introduction to those who are champions for change in carbon monoxide safety. I learned years ago that there are many people out there for working for change. Lawyers, doctors, members of the housing industry, home repair specialists, community groups, and government organizations are working to create awareness, laws, new regulations, and buildings codes to keep people safe from carbon monoxide. Above all, the foundations who have lost loved ones work every day to prevent CO injuries.
CO related injuries in cars are much more prominent than people realize. I have spoken to Mother's who have lost their children in cars, daughters who have lost parents, and people who have suffered low dose CO poisoning. CO safety in cars has many solutions like integrated alarms, automatic shutoffs, and emissions tests. Many of the beCOsafe followers are true champions for change in car safety!
One challenge with communicating carbon monoxide exposure in homes is that homes are heated in so many different ways. The simple message is to stress 'regular repair and maintenance'; however, as a young homeowner I know how uneducated we can be about our homes. If we do not ask questions about home heating systems, no one will ever give us information.

This one is AWESOME, and can easily be incorporated into every lesson on carbon monoxide awareness! Creative, Engaging, and even Suspenseful! Exactly what is needed to bring carbon monoxide dangers to public attention! Congrats @hookeroakschool and @NIEHS for this accomplishment!
Thank you to @LynnCOAware and The PSHE Association in developing and providing educational curriculum materials for CO education!
